There are many religions in the world.. not just the five major ones. Religion is just a unification of the people who believe or do the same things. When you have many of these religions you get divisions.
Anyway the hindus have thought deeply about spirituality itself. And categorised it into four paths.. we'll explain what they are.
All spiritual practices are either in one or a combination of these four paths. Islam and Christianity for instance is karma and bakhti, with rare occasions of kriya. Well... Mindless kriya with no lessons I'd say (i mean the five prayers).. I know more about islam than Christianity.
Anyway let's discuss the four paths....
1 bakhti (devotion or worship)... Easy stuff worhsip a god... And if you're lucky and he's real and he likes you he'll take you with him. This is the emotional path. You must love in this path... Unfortunately islam adds fear to the equation and I'm doubting the possibility of having both in the heart. But yeah
2 karma... Outer action with absolute involvement. I don't know much about this path. Of course i have karma with me but i don't really use it to my benefit... I do feed street cats and pat on street dogs but yeah whatever.
3 my love... My soul... Kriya... That's inner action. Like meditation and pranayama. Both of which i enjoy. This the path of someone who has the understand what the fuck is going on in order to progress .. well not necessarily, that happens in the next path... You can still do a yoga or a practice mindlessly and meet god. Or... Be god... But this is a big learning opportunity too.
4 finally gyan.. or jnana ... This is the path of knowledge and wisdom.. very hard to not hallucinate conclusions on this path. I bet this is the biggest challenge. Thats why a lot of yogis and gurus belittle using the mind for growth. But it's possible. Just... Hard to conceptualise god in the mushy soup of electricity inside our skulls.
So you can use your body outwardly focused (karma)... You can use your body inwardly focused(kriya)... you can use your emotions (bakht)...or you can use your mind(gyan)
